On September 11, 1973, a U.S.-backed coup put the dictator Augusto Pinochet in control of the government and people of Chile. During his 17-year reign, Pinochet imprisoned an estimated 80,000 people and “disappeared” (killed ) at least 3,000. The bodies of many of those murdered by his orders were dumped in the Atacama Desert.
